Haledegaun ligger ca. 7 km nord for Nagarkot – og 400-600 m længere nede – ad snoede, dårlige grusveje. For gående er afstanden kortere, og turen kan klares på 1,5 time.

Der er 84 husholdninger, hvoraf 9 er Dalitter og 2 Janjatis. Befolkningstallet er 473.

De dyrker ris, majs og hirse, og der er også gode muligheder for at dyrke citroner, kardemomme, kartofler og grøntsager med henblik på salg. To floder leverer rigligt vand til kunstvanding.

Der er en skole til de yngste børn og en sundhedsklinik i landsbyen.

Geographical placement

Haledegaun is a village located in Baluwapati Deupur V.D.C., ward No.5 of Kavrepalanchok District, Mid-development Region of Nepal. It is about 1.5 hours to walk down or 7 km to drive in dusty road from Nagarkot, a famous touristic area. haledegaun1It lies to the north direction from Nagarkot. Nagarkot lies one hour’s drive to the northeast of Kathmandu.

The village sprawls down the hillside in three areas. On the picture to the right you see the top part of the village.

Number of inhabitants

There are 84 households. The total population of the village is 473. The female population is 227 and male 246. There are 109 children, 54 girls and 45 boys.

Ethnic description (tribe, caste)

73 households are Brahmins and Chetris, and there are 9 Dalit households and 2 Janjatis households. The Dalits, the so-called untouchables, are the most vulnerable group and are the poorest among residents in Haledegaun. They have only little land or no land. The Dalit People are illiterate and they have little knowledge for their social development. They send their children for labour work, as they cannot produce enough food on the little land they have. Therefore, their children do not go to school.

Main source of income

People grow rice, maize and millet on the steep terraces on hillsides. There are good possibilities for growing lots of potatoes, lemon, Alainchi (cardamom) and commercial vegetables. There is plenty of water for irrigation. There are two rivers, one on each side of the village.

25-30 people have migrated to Gulf countries, Malaysia and India for work, as unskilled workers, and they send earnings back to their families.

School

There is a Primary school. The name of the School is Shree Sanjibani Primary School. The school provides primary level Education (Class1-5) for the children. There are 55 students, 30 girls and 25 boys. After finishing the primary level education the children have to go to another village/Ward school which takes 1.5 hours walking or to Kathmandu/Bhaktapur which is costly for secondary or higher education. Especially Dalit families have difficulty to pay for uniforms, exercise books, pencils and school bags for their children.

Health clinic

There is a community health post in the village. An NGO named HTC has established the health post. People get primary health service from the health post. There is a trained volunteer CMA, Community Medical Assistant, to provide minor treatment for minor injuries and problems.

Community organisations

Women in Haledegaun have created a woman community organisation in the village. The organisation acts as micro finance and savings association. They collect little money once a month and provide small loans to who needs it.

Housing

The roofs of 69 houses are made of iron seats, 11 are made of slate and 3 are made of tile. Dalit houses are old mud house they use the dry thatch grass for roofing and Janajatis (indigenous people) houses are permanent (Brick or stone) home they use jasta (iron sheet) for roofing. At the end of 2013, 75 household in the village have built toilets. The rest of the households are going to build toilets soon. The Village Development Committee, VDC, is going to announce NO OPEN TOILET VDC at the end of this year.

Haledegaun agreed to collaborate with ASK and Triangle in February 2014. It makes part of the Village Development Committee that consist of 9 wards. Trianglen has worked with villages in 7 of the 9 wards, and has now invited villages from the last two wards in 2014, to complete the collaboration with the whole VDC.
